Oregan Networks unveil their new Enhanced TV STB Reference Design
(7th July 1999) Oregan Networks Ltd unveiled their new Enhanced TV STB reference design in the Cirrus Logic booth at the Computex Exhibition in Taipei last month.
The new STB boasts impressive specifications, and has been designed specifically for the analogue Datacasting market, allowing it to support multiple TV tuners, permitting mass download of multimedia content to its integral hard disc via the Vertical Blanking Interval (VBI) bandwidth of a standard analogue TV broadcast signal. It also offers a complete Enhanced TV environment, permitting seamless convergence between regular TV viewing and the newly created environment of the Internet and other services delivered by the STB. Oregan clearly has Asian markets very firmly in their sights, since the reference design incorporates much technology required for all of the Chinese, Korean and Japanese territories. The native Oregano browser, whilst being HTML 3.2 compliant, supports 16-bit TrueType font rendering and Oregan offer handwriting recognition for all these Asian scripts. Oregan state it is modular enough to be easily adapted to satisfy any number of Enhanced TV STB markets, and are currently negotiating with a number of manufacturers to deliver consumer products derived from the design. Oregan’s VP Business Development, Mark Perry, revealed, "This is the first of many complete solution reference designs from Oregan. We have been developing the core components of these Internet devices, such as the Oregano web browser, and are now ready to start delivering to the market. Additional designs such as webphones and wireless Internet devices will follow shortly, plus the results of some substantial work we are now involved in for the emerging DVB markets. These new devices allow us to deliver varied multimedia content in a targeted and controlled manner from our Xeus Portal Server, which is Oregan’s central product." The STB design is based around an integrated ARM core processor from Cirrus Logic, which offers a cost effective and efficient solution for this market. Teamed with advanced anti-flicker display technology, the STB offers a fluent and ergonomic environment for the user.
