DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE CHOOSES FLYING COLORS INTERACTIVE TO DYNAMICALLY ENGAGE THEIR TELEVISION BROADCAST AUDIENCE

FCI'S SYSTEM OFFERS VIEWERS A FRONT ROW SEAT WITH THE CLICK OF THEIR "REMOTE"

(Washington, DC) - On October 4, 2000, the Department of Defense (DoD) will present an electronic town hall meeting featuring Secretary of Defense William Cohen, Deputy Secretary of Defense Rudy de Leon, and other high level Pentagon officials. The broadcast will focus on the future of Defense Reform initiatives and will showcase the capabilities of Flying Colors Interactive (FCI), specifically their audience participation systems.

"While watching the broadcast, interactive viewers can ask questions, bookmark topics of interest, and participate in audience polls directly through their television sets. Leveraging these features is going to allow us to increase the value and impact of all of our video programming," said Lieutenant Colonel Manning of the DoD's Defense Acquisition University.

To implement interactive features, the show's producers - Ashby & Associates of Alexandria, VA -- provided FCI with input on the TV-screen design, interactive functionality, and content. FCI then configured its services to meet the producer's unique requirements. The interactive commands were then incorporated directly into the broadcast by the National Captioning Institute (NCI), along with the closed captioning content. During the broadcast FCI systems distributed the interactive content and reported back, real-time, on each viewer's interactive experience.

"Interactive television is the next step in the evolution of programming and audience participation," said Lynn Hanford, FCI's Director of Creative Services. "We are combining broadcast quality video and CD quality sound with the interactive features of the internet to create a new dynamic experience that is unrivaled."

Initially FCI's applications will be delivered exclusively through interactive TV set-top boxes. However, before December, FCI will offer comparable audience participation services to the broadband webcasting community. And, by the end of 2001, FCI expects to deliver interactive services to other Internet appliances, including a wide range of wireless devices."
