AOLTV Rolled Out With Little Promotion: AOL provides interactive TV with Time Warner links (03NOV00) (MSNBC.WSJ)
(alt.link)
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports "AOL says it won't turn AOLTV into an exclusive promotional vehicle for Time Warner....
The early version of AOLTV points to so much Time Warner content simply because it was the first programmer to sign on,
AOL says." WSJ also reports the slow AOLTV rollout with little promotion "gives AOL time to work out bugs - a recent tryout
of the service indicates it has its work cut out for it." (Preview of Ruel's Review on AOLTV: Different but WebTV Plus has nothing
to worry about at the moment....)

Build A Car, Watch AOLTV: DaimlerChrysler, General Motors, and the UAW to offer AOL for PC and AOLTV to
auto workers in U.S. (02NOV00) (AOL)
The news announcement states, "GM and DaimlerChrysler Corporation employees will have easy access to
the features and functionality of AOL and the Internet through the AOL service or the AOLTV service, which will
be delivered via either the HUGHES DIRECTV digital satellite system or through a Philips receiver set-top box."
The news announcement also cites General Motors president and CEO Rick Wagoner as indicating,
"Approximately 75 percent of GM employees have personal computers and virtually all have televisions."
Auto workers would pay either $3 per month for AOL for PC service, $5 per month for AOLTV service which includes
the set-top box, or $31.95 per month for AOLTV and DIRECTV which includes the set-top box.

Flip-Side Of Disney Versus AOL-Time Warner, Time Warner Cable, And Comcast: BSkyB really wants the
UK television network ITV to end its absence from Sky Digital (03NOV00) (MediaGuardian)
This is not really about interactive TV ("iTV"), but about Independent TV ("ITV") in the UK. The BSkyB-ITV situation here
is the flip-side of the overall complaints from Disney against AOL-Time Waner, Time Warner Cable,
and Comcast regarding carriage, "open access," and "fair access" for Disney content and interactivity on cable.
How about if you didn't want to be carried on a particular cable TV or satellite TV service? That is what is illustrated in the
long-running BSkyB-ITV situation.
The MediaGuardian quotes an ITV spokesperson as stating,
"In every home in Britain ITV is the most popular channel and in digital homes it is drawing viewers away
from the Sky Digital platform. Our autumn schedule has performed very strongly and saw us grow audience
share for the third year running. With figures like that, it's not surprising they want us on their platform."
"ITV" here stands for Independent Television which is a federation of regional broadcasters
operating on Channel 3 throughout the UK and was founded in 1955. That's why you may see some people saying
"iTV" for interactive TV to differentiate from ITV in the UK (I'd rather just say "interactive TV" or "interactive television.")

"If we forget about 'TV on the Internet' for a moment, we can see that the potential for broadband media is much
wider than simply delivering television programs interactively over the Internet."

Broadband To Push Movies To The Set-Top: Core Competence president David M. Piscitello discusses testing of
a DSL video rental service (02OCT00) (ClecPlanet)
Core Competence Inc. president David M. Piscitello writes, "One trial, still under development, will
explore the viability of DSL as a delivery method for a video rental service.... The service provider installs an integrated
access device (IAD) in a DSL customer's residence. This device is pre-loaded with about a dozen movies.... New movies
are uploaded to the IAS as a background task, perhaps over the course of an entire week prior to making these available
for selection; in this manner, even modest bandwidth (384 Kbps) is sufficient to deliver DVD-quality movies to the home."
This is "Push TV," or "Push Movies," using broadband. -ruel
