The Washington Post quotes UCLA communications professor Jeffrey Cole as describing web surfing as a "shared household
activity" and further cites Cole as indicating "nearly half of users spend time online each week with someone else sitting next to them."

UCLA Internet Report: Surveying The Future (October2000) (UCLA)
The UCLA report says currently that telephone modem access dominates internet access at 80%, cable modems at 10%,
Web TV at 4%, T1/T3 lines at 2%, DSL at 1%, and "other" at 2%. The report also shows that 97% of internet users watch TV,
23% play videogames, 87% listen to the radio, and 85% listen to recorded music. Although internet users do watch TV, the
report states they "watch significantly less television than non-users."

In the longer Wired version of the Reuters news story, Reuters reports on real gun battles in China between cable companies and telcos:
"Gunfights and riots broke out in some counties after cable TV officials chopped down telephone lines that carried video
programming, and one state newspaper reported that more than 100 people were injured or killed in the clashes."
In another article, Newsbytes then apparently understates the riotous circumstances by reporting China then "put down strict
regulations that separated the industries after fierce competition between cable TV executives and phone officials in
southern China got out of hand."
