Former TV Online magazine publisher Phillip Swann predicts people will watch TV like how they read books
because of interactive personal TV (09OCT00) (InteractiveWeek)
Interactive Week quotes former TV Online magazine publisher Phillip Swann as stating,
"I predict people will start watching TV the way they read books, because with a [personal video recorder] you
can pause shows. I think you'll see people watch shows for five or 10 minutes and then move around because
they have the ability to do that." The article says Swann's new book TV.com: How Television Is Shaping Our Future
is "due out in February," but it is really to be published NEXT month in November (you can
click here to pre-order the new book).
As for people's TV viewing habits, I would add that people already do
take breaks every 10 minutes or so from the TV because of the commercial breaks. Personal TV and PVRs/DVRs
give control to the viewer as to when those breaks occur and those breaks may not coincide with commercial breaks.
Also, as others have said, the value of personal TV and PVRs/DVRs is in the time-shifting and personal TV
scheduling. People are already in the VCR habit of time-shifting and pausing a videotape to take a break
whenever they want. Personal TV, PVRs/DVRs make the time-shifting and pausing for breaks more convenient
because you don't need to find a videotape to record a show. -ruel

In commenting on "Unsurface," Newsbytes quotes iCrunch.com general manager Becky Savell as stating,
"There will be lot of companies developing lockers. MP3 created one of the first lockers and it was successful, and
that is what led to at least some of its legal trouble. I think it is significant that Sony has focused on the locker application.
They are trying to define the next generation of what a record label is. No label is going to give another label the
advantage of storing music in a proprietary locker."
